What Are The Technical Requirements For SSI In California
Besides being disabled, to receive SSI you must meet certain income and resource limitations. These are often called the technical requirements to apply for SSI benefits.
For income, Social Security treats earned income differently than unearned income. However, all income with very limited exceptions is considered. Even if your income falls beneath the threshold to apply for SSI, any income will also offset your monthly SSI benefit if Social Security approves your application.
For resources, an individual can only have $2000 in assets or resources besides one home and one vehicle (and some other very limited exceptions). A married couple can only have $3000 in assets and resources.
Speaking with one of our Social Security disability experts can help you determine if you meet the technical requirements to apply for SSI.
How Does Social Security Compute The Benefit Amount?
Social Security computes the first SSI payment from the first full month after the person applied for SSI. However, if you are found to be disabled at some point after the application is filed, then the first SSI payment would be the month after the onset date of disability. The amount paid may not be the same every month. The amount depends on other sources of income and living arrangements. The federal SSI rate and California SSI supplement may increase to keep up with the cost of living. Normally these increases come in January.
If a person or couple lives in another person’s home and does not pay rent, Social Security reduces the base SSI payment by one-third. This reduction takes the place of determining the exact monetary value of the assistance. SSA calls this the food and shelter deduction.
What About Medi-Cal Eligibility?
The California medical assistance program, also known as Medi-Cal, is a Medicaid program run by the California Department of Health Care Services that serves a wide range of California residents. If you become eligible to receive SSI benefits then you will automatically qualify for Medi-Cal.
