The National Highway Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA) is now demanding a nationwide recall of all vehicles installed with defective Takata airbags. NHTSA had recently discovered an airbag failure that occurred outside of a hot, humid climate, prompting the recall request. NHTSA plans to use its legal authority to fix these vehicles, even if the affected automakers and Takata do not agree to a full recall.

7.8 million vehicles have currently been recalled by 10 different auto manufacturers because of the potentially dangerous airbags. It is currently unknown how many more vehicles will be added to that tally if a full nationwide recall is announced, but some early estimates by NHTSA expect that up to 20 million vehicles could be recalled. Takata is already struggling to manufacture the replacement parts.
