Carmageddon II has passed, and according to Los Angeles Mayor Villaraigosa, it was a success. As it did with the original Carmageddon, the 405 freeway opened ahead of schedule with all of the necessary construction work completed. Mayor Villaraigosa offered his thanks to drivers who stayed off the road. It was estimated that in order for Carmageddon II to be successful, there needed to be about 350,000 fewer drivers traveling the Sepulveda Pass.
The site of an empty freeway managed to draw some onlookers, seven of whom were cited for getting on the freeway. CHP had previously warned that no one was allowed on the freeway after some mishaps seen in the first Carmageddon last year.
Major freeway closures are often the result of and cause of many auto accidents. Fortunately with the Carmageddons, the huge public awareness campaign saved many motorists from certain gridlock and certainly many potential car accidents.
