Whiplash

One of the most common injuries that is not felt immediately after a car accident is whiplash. This injury can happen when a person’s neck is forced back and forth violently. It is compared to the way a whip is cracked, hence the name. When this occurs, muscle, ligaments, and other soft tissues get stretched well beyond their typical range of motion.

When a person suffers a whiplash injury, it can take hours, or sometimes days, for bruising and swelling to appear. Once symptoms appear, they can include a stiff and painful back and neck, dizziness, headache at the base of the skull, fatigue, and blurred vision. Minor whiplash injuries generally heal within a week.

However, some victims can develop long-term consequences and effects of a whiplash injury. These can include sleep issues, ringing in the areas, and problems with memory and with concentrating.

Whiplash is most common in rear-end accidents, though it can occur in any type of accident. The CDC notes that about 25% of car accident victims that go to the hospital have some type of neck and back injury such as whiplash.

Concussions

A concussion is a closed head injury that is caused when there is a violent blow to the head. This can happen easily in any number of types of car accidents. Concussion symptoms can include headache, nausea, ringing in the ears, vomiting, slurred speech, and fatigue. In some cases, a person passes out right away from a concussion. In other cases, they do not have symptoms for hours after the accident.

The symptoms of a concussion can last for a few days, weeks or can be long-term. The potential consequences can include sleep issues, memory loss, light and noise sensitivity, concentration issues, irritability, behavioral changes, depression, and an inability to taste or smell.
