The magazine Pediatrics has published an exhausting study that shows what many doctors have long known: When a child suffers form a concussion (or any type of traumatic brain injury) they can have recurring headaches for as long as a year after the injury happens. More About the Study
The study in question looked at 400 children who went to the ER for a head injury. They saw the children three months after their initial hospital care and found that more than 50% of them still had recurring headaches. These headaches were serious enough that they created significant difficulty in sleeping and / or concentrating for the children.
They saw them six months after the initial injury and found that more than one-quarter of them were still suffering from headaches. As you may guess, the children who suffered more serious head injuries were more likely to have more severe headaches that lasted longer and continued for longer after the initial injury.
There is Often Little Help for Headaches Caused by Concussions
The doctors who were involved in the noted study were quick to say that while there is now significant research that shows the causes and potential long-term effects of these serious brain injuries, much less research has bene done to determine how effective treatment options are for headaches caused by concussions.
The general advice to get enough rest and stay hydrated can help some patients but not all of them. It is common for a child who suffers a severe headache caused by a brain injury to have no other option than waiting out the pain. When you consider that half a million children are treated for traumatic brain injuries each year, it is clear that this is an issue that needs more research. While many of the head traumas happen during sports activities, not all of them do.
