Preventing Whiplash in Car Accidents

There are a number of things you can and should do to low your risk of whiplash if you are in an accident. First, make sure that your headrest is appropriately adjusted. It should be positioned directly behind your head. The top should be at the top of your head. If you are tall this may not be possible, but you can still raise it as high as it will go. Likewise, a short person can lower it as far as possible.

Sit back in your car seat so that there is as little space as possible between the headrest and the back of your head. You may need to adjust how the seat reclines to achieve this. Ideally, the recline should be less than 20 degrees. This will help keep your body still if an accident happens, which can help prevent the head from jerking back and forth. Keep in mind that one study showed that a headrest that is within two inches of the back of the head is twice as effective as one that is further away.

Finally, make sure that you always wear your seatbelt when you’re driving – and make sure it is being worn correctly. This means adjusting it so that the shoulder belt goes across the chest – never behind the back. This may be less comfortable but it is much safer.

If you believe you may have suffered a whiplash injury then your next call should be to your doctor. Contrary to what many people believe, there are medical treatments that can help.
