Uber drivers can get into accidents just like any other driver

Have Ridesharing Services Made the Roads Safer?

According to the CDC, an average of 28 people per day are killed in car accidents involving an intoxicated driver. Over the years, many initiatives have been implemented in an attempt to reduce drunk driving and drugged driving accidents, from imposing stricter penalties for DUIs to designated driver campaigns to providing free ridesharing services in college towns.

When Uber, Lyft, and other ridesharing apps became popular several years ago, many people predicted that these services would help reduce the number of accidents by giving intoxicated drivers easier access to a safe ride home. Uber actually made this claim in their own promotional materials, which promised that Uber would make America’s roads safer.

Unfortunately, recent research suggests that Uber and similar services have not had the expected impact. According to a study from Oxford University and the University of Southern California, there has not been any significant change in the rate of drunk driving fatalities pre-and post-Uber. The researchers offered two main reasons why this might be so. First of all, Uber may be simply replacing taxi services for many drinkers, rather than attracting new users who formerly would have driven while intoxicated. Secondly, there may not be enough Uber drivers available in certain markets and/or late at night to accommodate all the individuals who might need a ride.

This research contradicts earlier findings publicized by Uber, which showed that the availability of ridesharing services reduced the number of DUIs up to 62 percent. While reducing DUIs is good, this does not necessarily translate to a reduction in DUI accidents, much less fatal accidents.

Uber Drivers Can Have Accidents Too

While Uber drivers certainly do not drink or use drugs while on the job, this doesn’t mean that they are guaranteed not to get into accidents. Just like any driver, an Uber driver can cause a car accident through their own negligence. They can also get hit by another driver who may be drunk, on drugs, or careless.

If you are riding in an Uber car that gets into an accident, you can and should seek compensation for any injuries you may sustain. Uber carries insurance for this purpose, and you are automatically covered regardless of whether it was the Uber driver or another party who caused the accident.

For best results, you don’t want to deal with Uber yourself. Instead, hire an experienced Uber passenger accident attorney from The Law Offices of Larry H. Parker. We can help you secure full and fair compensation for your injuries and suffering. For a free consultation, dial 800-333-0000 now.
