Salmonella
Product recalls for foods tainted by salmonella always make the news, and for good reason. Salmonella infections from improperly processed food items can cause severe and widespread illness. People infected with the salmonella bacteria usually experience severe bouts of diarrhea, vomiting, fever, and cramping, with the symptoms lasting up to a week. The effects of salmonella poisoning can be extremely dangerous, sometimes requiring hospitalization for severe dehydration. Worse, if a salmonella infection spreads in to the blood stream, without treatment, death can occur.
Salmonella recalls have affected many well-known products. Recent incidents of Salmonella recalls include:
|
- January 2009 - King Nut Companies and Peanut Corporation of America. A huge outbreak of salmonella contamination stemming from peanut paste produced in Blakely, Georgia. Salmonella bacteria found its way in to thousands of different products, including peanut butter sold in bulk to schools, hospitals, and nursing homes. Over 600 people across 41 states became ill, with numerous reports of deaths.
- April 2008 - An estimated 40,000 people could have been been poisoned from an outbreak of salmonella from jalapeño peppers in Mexico.
- February 2007 - Peter Pan and Great Value peanut butter was linked to 425 confirmed cases of salmonella poisoning.
