YAZ and Yasmin
Birth Control Injury Attorneys
YAZ and Yasmin, manufactured by Bayer Pharmaceuticals, and the generic drug Ocella, manufactured by Barr Laboratories, are oral contraceptives indicated for birth control, premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD), an extreme form of premenstrual syndrome (PMS), and moderate acne. Serious injuries have been linked to YAZ, Yasmin, and Ocella, including heart attacks, strokes, blood clots, deep vein thrombosis (DVT), pulmonary embolism, and even death. The contraceptives are made from a combination of drospirenon, a synthetic progestin, and ethinyl estradiol, a synthetic estrogen.
Bayer Agrees to Settle About 500 Lawsuits
(April 2012) - Bayer has agreed to pay at least $110 million to settle about 500 lawsuits filed after consumers developed blood clots while taking Yaz or Yasmin birth control. There are more than 11,000 lawsuits against Bayer for injuries sustained while taking the drospirenone-containing Yaz and Yasmin.
FDA Concludes Higher Risk of Blood Clots
(April 2012) - The FDA has completed its review of drospirenone birth control pills such as Yaz and Yasmin. Based on this review, the FDA concludes that these birth control pills may be associated with a higher risk of blood clots than other birth control pills.
Bayer Withheld Blood Clot Risk Data
A document unsealed in federal court appears to show that Bayer withheld safety data on the drug Yasmin from the FDA in 2004. Thousands of lawsuits have been filed against Bayer by patients who claim they were not sufficiently warned of the risks of blood clots and other adverse events when they were prescribed Yasmin and Yaz. See the news article.
FDA Recommends Label Change
In December of 2011, the experts panel of the FDA voted 21-5 that the labeling for Yaz does not provide enough information on the risks of blood clots. The FDA unequivocally stated that the label should reflect the dangers of debilitating, and potentially fatal, blood clots while taking Yaz and other drospirenone birth controls.
FDA MedWatch Announcement
Two recently published studies concluded that the risk of venous thromboembolism (VTE) in women is greater in those who take birth control containing drospirenon (such as YAZ and Yasmin) than those taking a different kind of birth control. That risk is reportedly up to 3 times greater. An FDA MedWatch bulletin confirms that the FDA is aware of the new studies.
Risks for Permanent Injuries
Young women in their 20s and 30s should not be having strokes, heart attacks, or blood clots. Yet, some women taking the birth control pills YAZ and Yasmin have found themselves to be victims of injuries causing permanent disability and worse. The effect on these women and their families can be catastrophic.
Last year, YAZ ran into trouble with the US Food and Drug Administration after two misleading advertisements and received a warning letter. YAZ was advertising benefits of the medication that were not approved of by the FDA. Women who may have taken YAZ for these unverified benefits could be at risk for complications normally associated with birth control medication.
Doctors in The Netherlands are being advised by their own professional body, the Dutch College of General Practitioners, to not prescribe Yasmin. The group cites the death of a 17 year old Dutch girl from DVT, as well as over 40 episodes of venous thrombosis reported among women taking Yasmin in Europe. Two of the reported incidents were fatal.
