Salmonella in Peanut Butter
The CDC has reported that a massive, nationwide outbreak of salmonella typhimurium is occurring. The CDC and public health officials has confirmed that the cause of the outbreak is peanut butter. Specifically, the CDC and FDA have confirmed the outbreak of salmonella is from peanut pasted produced by the Peanut Coproation of America in Blakely, Georgia.
On January 10, King Nut Companies and it's manufacturer, Peanut Corporation of America, issued a voluntary recall of any peanut butter produced in its Blakely, Georgia facility after July 1, 2008. The affected peanut butter is sold in bulk under the brand names Parnell's Pride and King Nut and typically distributed to schools, hospitals, and nursing homes. Peanut Corporation of America products are distributed to and used by dozens of food companies.
The nationwide recall of affected products now contains over 1800 products. A congressional and FBI investigation has begun in an attempt to determine who is responsible. The company knew their products were tainted with salmonella and still decided to sell those products. This serious and willful disregard for public health has now sickened over 600 people and associated with eight deaths.
