Car Accident in Stanislaus County: Four Victims Identified

A car accident in Stanislaus County involving four vehicles left four people killed.

According to the Stanislaus County Coroner’s Office, they are:

  • Clara Howells, a 1-year-old from Turlock
  • Angeles Escoto, a 19-year-old from Merced
  • Francis Catano, a 22-year-old from Merced
  • Patricia Lopez, age 60

The California Highway Patrol reported to the scene of the accident on McHenry Avenue just north of Hogue Road at about 4 p.m. on Tuesday.

At the site, officers discovered four vehicles were involved in the crash.

According to the CHP’s initial investigation, Angeles Escoto was heading north in a Mitsubishi sedan on McHenry Avenue.

Suddenly, she inexplicably switched to the #2 lane, returned to the #1 lane, and then veered into the oncoming southbound traffic. Consequently, she collided head-on with a Toyota SUV driven by Patricia Lopez.

Then, a southbound pickup truck subsequently hit both the Mitsubishi and the Toyota, and a Ram van also collided with the Mitsubishi.

Unfortunately, Angeles Escoto and her passenger, Francis Catano, died at the crash site.

Meanwhile, Patricia Lopez, the SUV driver, and her young passenger, Clara, succumbed to their injuries at the hospital.

Officer Tom Olsen of the CHP highlighted the unique sadness of incidents involving children, stating, “She (the mother) is doing just like anyone would be doing when they lost their child and mother in one day and, as first responders, we save all human life and that’s our job, but it’s different when there’s a child involved.”

Fortunately, the individuals in the Ford and Ram vehicles did not sustain injuries.

At present, the investigation is ongoing, and it remains undetermined whether drugs or alcohol were factors in this car accident in Stanislaus County.
